Berlin Welcomes Over 54,000 Ukrainian Refugees, Fostering Integration and Support

Three years into the Russian aggression in Ukraine, Berlin’s Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe has paid tribute to the capital’s extraordinary humanitarian response. Since the war’s onset, over 470,000 Ukrainian refugees have sought refuge in Berlin, and an estimated 54,000 now reside in the city with valid residence permits.

Berlin’s commitment to welcoming and supporting displaced Ukrainians has been unwavering. "The integration of the refugees is a top priority for our city," said Kiziltepe. "We are working tirelessly to ensure they find a new home here and have access to education, employment, healthcare, and cultural opportunities."

As of November 2024, nearly 19,900 individuals with Ukrainian citizenship are gainfully employed in Berlin. Over 17,500 hold jobs that provide social security benefits. "This is a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the opportunities Berlin offers," noted Kiziltepe.

The collaborative efforts of the Senate, districts, civil society, businesses, and individual volunteers have been instrumental in the city’s success in helping refugees settle in. "We have all played a significant role in supporting their arrival and enabling their integration into our community," said the Senator.

Berliners have been particularly praised for their compassion and welcoming spirit. "The open arms and warm hearts of Berliners are what have made all the difference," said Kiziltepe. "I am deeply grateful for their unwavering support."

The future holds both challenges and opportunities for Berlin’s Ukrainian population. While the arrival of refugees is expected to continue in the coming months, Kiziltepe remains optimistic about the city’s ability to meet their needs and facilitate their integration.

The city’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukrainian refugees is multifaceted. In addition to providing housing, healthcare, and education, the city is also working to foster cultural exchange and promote community building. Numerous initiatives have been launched to connect refugees with German culture and society, including language classes, cultural events, and mentorship programs.

Berlin’s response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis serves as a model for other cities worldwide. The city’s willingness to embrace diversity, provide humanitarian aid, and support vulnerable populations has set a positive example.

As the war in Ukraine continues, Berlin stands ready to welcome and assist those seeking refuge from the conflict. The city’s commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for Ukrainian refugees remains steadfast.
