Daniel Theis Returns to Bamberg for German National Team Stop

After waving to fans of his new club AS Monaco from the palatial rooftops of the principality, Daniel Theis is set to make a brief stopover in his former home away from home, Bamberg. It was in Bamberg where Theis won German championships in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The city will now host the German national team’s match against underdogs Bulgaria on Sunday (5:30 pm/Magentasport).

Theis, who recently departed the NBA after seven and a half years, has joined the national team for this exhibition game. "Of course, this is fantastic and shows the significance the national team holds for him," commented national team coach Álex Mumbrú on the unexpected addition, who is expected to arrive in Bamberg on Friday evening. The 32-year-old power forward is also firmly penciled in for this summer’s European Championship (August 27 – September 14).

"He expressed great interest and was eager to come. Naturally, we were delighted. It’s a positive sign when players actively seek to join the team," said Vice President Armin Andres about Theis. Six other world champions will join Theis in Bamberg: Johannes Voigtmann, Johannes Thiemann, Isaac Bonga, Andreas Obst, David Krämer, and Justus Hollatz.

In early March, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) plans to travel to the United States to gauge the willingness of NBA players to participate in the upcoming tournaments. Captain Dennis Schröder (Detroit Pistons) is expected to play, while Franz Wagner of the Orlando Magic is also likely to join the squad. Moritz Wagner, Franz’s brother, is out for several months after suffering a torn cruciate ligament and has already withdrawn from the European Championship.

Theis’s return to Bamberg marks a significant moment for the German national team, as he brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the squad. His presence will undoubtedly boost the team’s morale and ambitions as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
