National Park Expansion in the Black Forest Cleared for Takeoff
The expansion of the Black Forest National Park has received the green light, paving the way for the creation of a contiguous protected area. The National Park Council, the highest decision-making body for the reserve, voted overwhelmingly in favor of the plans, known as the "gap closure."
Bridging the Divide
The gap closure aims to connect the two existing sections of the national park, currently covering around 100 square kilometers, into a unified whole. "The combined, compact new national park will have an even greater impact on the Black Forest as a whole," said Environment Minister Thekla Walter (Greens). She emphasized that the decision was made in collaboration with neighboring communities, addressing their concerns and aspirations.
Addressing Community Concerns
To assuage local worries, the management of the bark beetle, a destructive tree pest, will primarily be handled by the state forestry agency, ForstBW. The ministry also provided guarantees for the development of essential infrastructure, such as electricity and internet access. Furthermore, existing paths and trails will be preserved.
Unanimous Approval with One Dissent
The National Park Council approved the expansion plans with only one dissenting vote. The decision, originally scheduled for January 31st, was postponed due to concerns raised by communities within the expansion area. Their apprehensions centered on bark beetle management and restrictions on activities such as free movement in management zones, wood storage, and mushroom and berry picking.
Government Agreement and Land Swap
The expansion plans were initially endorsed by the coalition government of Greens and CDU in October 2022. To facilitate the expansion, areas owned by the Murgschifferschaft forest cooperative will be exchanged for state-owned forest in the same region. The state will withdraw from the cooperative and sell its shares to the remaining owners.
Environmental Impact
The expansion is expected to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Black Forest. It will protect additional areas of ecologically valuable habitat and create a more resilient landscape that can better withstand climate change. The contiguous park will also provide a valuable resource for scientific research and nature-based recreation.
Economic and Social Benefits
The expansion is also anticipated to bring economic and social benefits to the region. Tourism, which already plays a significant role in the Black Forest, is expected to increase as visitors come to experience the expanded national park. Additionally, the preservation of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable forestry practices will support local communities and industries.
Looking Ahead
The legislation for the expansion is expected to be passed this fall and come into effect on January 1st, 2026. The implementation of the gap closure will be a gradual process, involving extensive consultation and collaboration with stakeholders.
The expansion of the Black Forest National Park marks a significant milestone in the protection and preservation of this iconic natural landscape. By bridging the gap between existing sections, the new national park will not only safeguard a vital ecosystem but also enhance the region’s environmental, economic, and social well-being for generations to come.
