Warsaw, Poland (AP) – President Joe Biden arrived in Poland on Tuesday, marking the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During his visit, Biden reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine and outlined the consequences Russia will face for its aggression.
Meeting with Polish President
Biden’s first order of business was a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda, a staunch ally of Ukraine. The two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict and Poland’s role in providing humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.
Biden praised Poland’s "extraordinary" support for Ukraine, stating, "You’ve taken in over 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees. You’ve provided food, medicine, and equipment to the Ukrainian people. And you’ve been a steadfast advocate for Ukraine in international fora."
Address to Crowd of Thousands
Later in the evening, Biden delivered a powerful speech to a crowd of thousands at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. He began by recalling the horrors of the past year, describing the "brutal and barbaric" attacks on Ukrainian civilians and the wanton destruction of Ukrainian cities.
Biden condemned Russia’s actions as "a test for the ages" and emphasized the importance of global unity in supporting Ukraine’s defense. He said, "We must remember this: Ukraine was not the aggressor. Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine was not trying to overthrow anyone’s government. Russia is trying to overthrow Ukraine’s elected government… We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not be divided."
Pledges of Continued Support
Biden reiterated that the United States remains committed to providing Ukraine with the military, economic, and humanitarian aid it needs to defend itself. He announced an additional $450 million in military assistance, including artillery rounds, Javelin missiles, air surveillance radars, and other critical equipment.
The president also unveiled new sanctions against Russia, targeting individuals and companies that have supported Russia’s war effort. "Today, we’re announcing new sanctions against Russia, including more than 100 individuals and entities that are supporting Russia’s war machine," Biden said. "These new sanctions will directly target banks, tech companies, defense manufacturers, and individuals who are aiding or abetting Russia’s war."
Consequences for Russia
Biden warned that Russia will continue to face severe consequences for its aggression. He said, "Russia has already lost thousands of soldiers on the battlefield. It’s seen its economy crippled. It’s isolated itself from the global community. And its reputation has been irreparably damaged."
Biden concluded his speech with a message of hope and resolve. He said, "We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not be divided. Together, we will prevail."
Reactions from Russia
Russia has dismissed Biden’s visit to Poland as a propaganda stunt. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, "The United States has turned Poland into a stage for a dissolute anti-Russian performance."
The Russian Embassy in Poland also issued a statement accusing the United States of "escalating tensions" and "obstructing the search for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine."
Significance of Biden’s Visit
Biden’s visit to Poland is a powerful symbol of support for Ukraine and a clear message to Russia that the United States remains committed to Ukraine’s defense. The visit also coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion, a somber reminder of the human suffering and devastation that has resulted from Russia’s aggression.
