Berlin’s Education Budget Cuts Draw Harsh Criticism from Coalition Partner and Opposition
Berlin’s recently announced education budget cuts have sparked significant backlash, not only from the opposition but also from within the ruling coalition. The Berlin branch of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has accused Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (Christian Democratic Union, CDU) of breaking her word.
SPD Accuses Günther-Wünsch of Betrayal
The SPD alleges that Günther-Wünsch unilaterally decided to大幅削減central funding for programs such as anti-Semitism prevention, youth social work, and street outreach, despite previous agreements between the coalition partners.
"This is not only irresponsible, but it sends a dangerous signal that ‘Never Again’ apparently does not apply to education," said Dervis Hizarci, Chairman of the Kreuzberg Initiative Against Anti-Semitism. The group is facing a six-figure funding cut as part of these measures.
SPD education expert Maja Lasic echoed this sentiment, stating that the CDU seems to be targeting projects that do not align with their worldview. "This unconsulted action by our coalition partner is deeply offensive and must be condemned," she said.
Günther-Wünsch Defends Cuts as ‘Necessary’
Günther-Wünsch defended the cuts in the Education Committee of the House of Representatives, emphasizing the significant financial challenges facing the city. However, Alexander Freier-Winterwerb, the SPD’s family policy spokesperson, criticized the cuts as a "frontal attack on the social heart of Berlin."
"We understand the need for savings in difficult times, but not like this," Freier-Winterwerb said. "We are not willing to dismantle everything."
Cuts Seen as Counterproductive in the Fight Against Extremism
Critics argue that reducing funding for anti-Semitism and democracy education programs is particularly shortsighted at a time when these issues are on the rise.
"These cuts send the completely wrong signal," said Lisa Paus, a Green Party member of the German Bundestag and the Federal Minister for Family Affairs. "They undermine democracy and weaken the cohesion of our open society."
Call for Reversal
The SPD, the Green Party, and various civil society groups are demanding that the Senate reconsider these cuts and provide long-term financial security to important initiatives.
"We cannot afford to cut funding for programs that are vital to the future of our city and the protection of our democratic values," said Freier-Winterwerb.
The controversy highlights the tensions within the governing coalition and raises questions about the commitment of some members to combating extremism and promoting social justice.
