Realschule in Dachau Reopens After Ceiling Collapse
Incident and Damage
A section of the lowest layer of the ceiling in the underground parking garage of a Realschule (secondary school) in Dachau collapsed on Wednesday, prompting the closure of the entire school building and gymnasium. The incident caused damage to seven vehicles belonging to teachers, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to initial findings, the collapsed part of the ceiling was the lowest layer of plaster applied on top of a thermal insulation layer. The load-bearing ceiling itself, as well as the floor of the gymnasium above it, were not affected.
Investigation and Reopening
A structural engineer has since inspected the school building and cleared it for reopening, effective Friday. The gymnasium, however, will remain closed until Monday due to ongoing repairs.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the partial ceiling collapse and conducting ongoing inspections of the building. The Landratsamt (district office) of Dachau has confirmed that regular visual inspections by maintenance personnel were performed, and no indications of defects or cracks were previously detected.
Liability and Impact
The Landratsamt is currently examining a solution for swiftly and efficiently addressing the damage to the teachers’ vehicles. The total cost of the damage is yet to be determined.
The collapsed section of the underground parking garage, which was constructed in 2011 during the school’s renovation, remains closed along with adjacent areas. Authorities will assess whether any structural modifications are required before reopening these spaces.
Precautionary Measures
As a precautionary measure, similar structures throughout the district will be inspected.
School Operations
After a day of remote learning, students will be able to resume classes in person at the Realschule in Dachau from Friday onwards. The school is working to minimize disruptions and ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
