Team USA’s McAvoy Suffers Infection after Heroics Against Canada
Despite playing through pain, Boston Bruins’ star defenseman Charlie McAvoy has been admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital with an infection in his right shoulder.
McAvoy’s Injury Saga
McAvoy sustained the initial injury during Team USA’s game against Finland on February 13th. He underwent treatment from Team USA’s medical staff but experienced worsening pain upon returning to Boston.
Further evaluation by the Bruins’ medical team revealed an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant injury to his AC joint. On February 18th, McAvoy underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Impact on Team USA and Boston Bruins
McAvoy’s injury has forced him to withdraw from the 4 Nations final against Canada on Thursday. Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators will take his place in the lineup.
For the Bruins, McAvoy’s absence is a significant blow. As their top defenseman, he has been instrumental in their hopes of securing a playoff spot. The Bruins currently sit two points behind the Wild Card spot.
McAvoy’s Heroic Performance
Despite playing through the pain of his shoulder injury, McAvoy had a major impact in Team USA’s 3-1 win over Canada on Saturday. After Canada scored first, McAvoy delivered a thunderous hit on superstar Connor McDavid, giving the U.S. a much-needed boost.
Shortly after, Jake Guentzel equalized for the U.S., a moment that Team USA star Matthew Tkachuk attributed to McAvoy’s hit. "He just scored a goal, the building was rocking, and Charlie comes there and pops McDavid, like one of the hardest hits I’ve seen," Tkachuk said.
McAvoy finished the game with five hits in 19:27 of ice time, proving his determination and toughness even amid injury.
Updates on McAvoy’s Recovery
McAvoy remains hospitalized and is receiving intravenous antibiotics. His condition is improving, but the Bruins have not provided a timeline for his return.
