Icy Conditions on Berlin’s Bike Paths Pose Hazards Amid Transit Strike

Berlin’s ongoing transit strike, which has halted bus, tram, and subway services, has prompted many residents to turn to cycling as an alternative mode of transportation. However, the city’s icy and uneven bike paths pose significant risks to cyclists, according to Karl Grünberg, spokesperson for the Berlin chapter of the Allgemeinen Deutschen Fahrradclubs (ADFC, General German Bicycle Club).

Uneven and Hazardous Conditions

"Currently, the situation is a complete patchwork," Grünberg said in response to a query from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (German Press Agency). "One moment the bike path is clear, and the next transition point is a veritable mountain of snow."

The ADFC has urged the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR, Berlin Waste Management) to prioritize clearing bike paths during the strike, particularly in areas with icy surfaces.

Transitions pose Additional Risks

Grünberg emphasized the particular danger posed by transitions between roads and bike paths, where residual snow accumulates after being swept to the side by snow removal crews. Due to the cold temperatures, this snow quickly freezes, creating hazardous conditions for cyclists.

Lack of De-icing Measures on Bike Paths

The BSR cites legal stipulations prohibiting the use of de-icing agents such as salt or brine on designated bike paths due to environmental concerns, making it difficult to remove ice. Splitt or sand are also not viable alternatives as they do not melt the ice. Consequently, only snow removal is permitted on bike paths.

Recommendations for Cyclists

In light of these conditions, Grünberg advises cyclists to proceed cautiously, particularly at transitions, and to dismount and walk their bikes if necessary. In cases where mandatory bike paths are impassable due to ice, cyclists are permitted to use the road instead.

Impact of the Transit Strike

Verdi, the public sector labor union, has called for a 48-hour warning strike at the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG, Berlin Public Transport Authority) on Thursday and Friday. The strike is expected to paralyze bus, tram, and subway services throughout the capital, with only the S-Bahn (suburban railway) remaining operational. As a result, road traffic is likely to increase significantly during these days.

Tips for Safe Cycling in Icy Conditions

To minimize risks while cycling on icy paths, consider the following tips:

  1. Reduce your speed: Slow down to allow yourself more time to react to hazards.
  2. Coast down hills: Avoid braking on icy slopes as it can cause you to lose control.
  3. Be aware of your surroundings: Pay close attention to the surface conditions and anticipate potential obstacles.
  4. Signal and communicate clearly: Use hand signals to indicate your intentions and communicate with other cyclists and pedestrians.
  5. Use lights: Ensure your bike is equipped with working front and rear lights to improve visibility.
  6. Wear reflective clothing: Make yourself more visible to others, especially during low-light conditions.
  7. Consider studded tires: These specialized tires provide extra grip on icy surfaces.
  8. Carry a sand or salt bag: Use a small bag of sand or salt to improve traction on icy patches.
  9. Avoid using the brakes simultaneously: Braking abruptly on icy surfaces can cause you to skid.
  10. Keep your weight centered: Maintain a balanced position over the bike to enhance stability.
