Concerns Raised Over Hospital Care Cuts in Rhineland-Palatinate
Mainz, Germany – The opposition in Rhineland-Palatinate’s state parliament has expressed alarm over potential cuts to hospital services and called for greater commitment from the governing coalition.
CDU Warns of Site Closures
Christoph Gensch, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), expressed concern that the withdrawal of the German Red Cross (DRK) from the hospital sector could lead to an increase in hospital closures. He emphasized the state’s responsibility to address the issue and not simply rely on the federal government.
"We cannot afford to lose another system-relevant provider after the DRK’s withdrawal," Gensch said. "The health minister is not providing any solutions."
Free Voters and AfD Join Concerns
Helge Schwab, a member of the Free Voters, also warned of further turmoil in Rhineland-Palatinate, particularly in smaller hospital locations. Jan Bollinger, leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group, added that many hospitals were struggling financially and that a transitional funding solution was needed until the hospital reform takes effect.
Health Minister Reassures on Patient Care
Health Minister Clemens Hoch of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) stressed that medical care and jobs at the five hospital sites affected by the DRK’s insolvency would be safeguarded. He also expressed confidence in the quality of inpatient care in Rhineland-Palatinate, despite the ongoing hospital reform.
"We are particularly focused on sparsely populated regions," Hoch said. "However, with the hospital reform, there will be no hospital that will not undergo changes."
Hospital Reform Draws Criticism
The planned restructuring of Germany’s hospital network has sparked controversy. The reform, initiated by the previous grand coalition at the federal level, aims to reduce financial pressure on hospitals and concentrate complex treatments in specialized centers.
Critics argue that the reform will lead to a decrease in healthcare access, particularly in rural areas. They also contend that the transition period to the new system has not been adequately funded.
Ongoing Debate
The debate over hospital care in Rhineland-Palatinate is expected to continue as the state government finalizes its plans for implementing the national reform. The opposition has vowed to hold the government accountable for ensuring equitable and affordable healthcare for all residents.
