Arrests Made in Child Abuse Investigation at Catholic Institution in Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram, France

Following a year-long investigation into over 100 complaints alleging sexual and physical abuse at the Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram Catholic institution in southwestern France, three men have been taken into custody.

The arrests, announced on Wednesday, February 19th, 2023, by the Pau public prosecutor’s office, mark a significant development in the case that has attracted national attention.

Suspects and Accusations

The three men, born in 1931, 1955, and 1965, are accused of "aggravated rape, aggravated sexual assault, and/or aggravated violence" committed against victims between 1957 and 2004 within the institution.

The investigation was launched after numerous former students came forward with allegations of abuse at the institution, which housed a boarding school and a Catholic religious community.

Investigation and Arrests

Over the course of the investigation, which involved interviewing victims, witnesses, and gathering documentary evidence, the Pau prosecutor’s office identified several potential suspects.

After careful review of the evidence, the authorities issued warrants for the arrest of the three men, who were taken into custody on Wednesday.

Legal Proceedings

The suspects are currently being held in police custody for an initial period of 24 hours, which can be extended for an additional 24 hours with the authorization of the prosecutor’s office.

The prosecutor has declined to provide further details about the ongoing investigation, citing the need to protect the integrity of the judicial process.

Church Response

The Catholic Church in France has expressed its deep concern over the allegations and has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.

In a statement, the Bishop of Bayonne, Lescar, and Oloron, Marc Aillet, said, "We understand the suffering and pain experienced by victims and their families, and we assure them of our prayers and support."

National Significance

The arrests in the Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram case have sent shockwaves across France, where the issue of child abuse within religious institutions has become a national concern.

In recent years, several other high-profile cases have emerged, leading to increased scrutiny of the Catholic Church and demands for accountability and transparency.

Calls for Justice and Support

Victims’ rights advocates have welcomed the arrests and called for a thorough and impartial investigation. They have also urged authorities to provide support to survivors and ensure that they have access to justice.

The ongoing investigation and judicial proceedings will be closely watched by victims, their families, and the public, who seek both justice for the victims and a full understanding of the extent of the abuses that occurred within the Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram institution.
