Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles

Chiharu Shiota’s immersive installations at the Grand Palais in Paris evoke a haunting and ethereal realm, where the enchanting world of fairy tales transforms into a spiderweb of nightmares. From the grand staircase, visitors are greeted by strands of crimson and onyx, ensnaring boats, wedding gowns, and suitcases, creating a mystifying labyrinth that draws them into Shiota’s enigmatic universe.

Beyond these seven immersive installations, the exhibition unveils the breadth of Shiota’s artistic vision through videos and photographs documenting her interventions in cities from Berlin to Venice. The artist unravels the symbolism behind her intricate webbed creations: "These threads intertwine; sometimes, they bristle and stretch as if connecting my mental universe to the external cosmos."

Art as Catharsis

Shiota’s archives reveal mesmerizing scenographies designed for Shakespeare’s "The Winter’s Tale" and Wagner’s "Tristan und Isolde." However, it is in her modest sketches that the artist exposes vulnerability and resilience. For Shiota, these sketches encapsulate monstrous cells and proliferating organisms, allusions to the illness she courageously overcame. Through her art, she transforms suffering into catharsis.

Installation Highlights

"In the Beginning…"

This installation invites visitors into an intimate, womb-like space enveloped by a blanket of crimson threads. Suspended within this ethereal expanse are fragile glass spheres, each containing a delicate butterfly. These symbolic cocoons evoke the cycle of life, birth, and transformation.

"The Key in the Hand"

A labyrinthine network of threads encircles boats suspended in the air. Visitors navigate through this maze, unlocking the symbolic keys that hang from the ceiling. Each key represents a personal experience or memory, inviting introspection and contemplation.

"Journey of a Soul"

A procession of suitcases, each carrying the weight of untold stories, winds its way through an undulating thread installation. The suitcases, like human vessels, explore the themes of migration, displacement, and the passage of time.

"Uncertain Journey"

A forest of black dresses, each suspended by a web of threads, creates a haunting and mysterious spectacle. The dresses sway gently, as if in response to unseen forces, evoking a sense of vulnerability and the fragility of human existence.
