The Impact of the Pandemic on Senior Enrollment in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Higher Education Institutions

Amid the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s (MV) higher education landscape has seen a modest decline in senior enrollment. According to a survey conducted by the German Press Agency, no university in the state has registered an increase in senior student numbers since the onset of contact restrictions.

While the dip in enrollment is not as pronounced as in neighboring states like Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, some institutions have reported a slight decrease.

University of Rostock: A Modest Decline Amidst Popularity

The University of Rostock witnessed a modest drop in senior enrollment during the winter semester of 2024/25, registering 22 seniors as guest auditors. Popular subject areas among senior students include history, philosophy, and theology.

Seniorenakademie: A Hub for Post-Retirement Learning

In contrast to the university’s decline, MV’s Seniorenakademie (Senior Academy) has experienced a greater influx of seniors seeking meaningful activities after retirement. The academy offers a variety of courses that cater to diverse interests, but without the direct interaction with younger students.

While the academy has also seen a slight dip compared to pre-pandemic peak levels, with 631 registrations for the current semester compared to a peak of 660, its enrollment numbers are gradually recovering.

University of Greifswald: Intellectual Curiosity and Language Learning

"Seniors are keenly interested in maintaining their intellectual fitness in their later years," notes Jan Meßerschmidt, press spokesperson for the University of Greifswald. "Many of them take up new languages, such as Polish for neighboring relations or Lithuanian for their next vacation in the Baltics."

The university has typically hosted 60 to 80 guest auditors in recent semesters, with about a quarter of them being over 60 years old. Despite the overall decrease in senior enrollment, the university’s senior student population remains significant, accounting for 9,868 students in total.

Comparison to Neighboring States: Less Pronounced Decline in MV

MV has experienced a less pronounced decline in senior guest auditors compared to northern German states like Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The University of Hamburg, for instance, reported a drop of over 400 senior enrollment compared to pre-pandemic levels.

During the pandemic, university courses were largely conducted online, posing accessibility challenges for older adults who may not have been familiar with this mode of instruction.

Alternative Options: Seniorenschule and Lectures

Besides traditional guest auditor programs, MV offers alternative educational opportunities for seniors. The University of Neubrandenburg, for example, hosts a Seniorenschule (Senior School) alongside its regular guest auditor program. This school provides free lectures by academic staff from various disciplines, designed to be accessible to all educational backgrounds. The enrollment in this program has remained stable.

Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock: Limited Senior Enrollment

The Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock has seen only occasional senior enrollments as guest auditors since the pandemic, according to its press spokesperson, Angelika Thönes.

Senior Contributions to Higher Education

Despite the overall enrollment decline, universities in MV highly value the contributions of senior students. Their diverse experiences and fresh perspectives enrich classroom discussions. Senioren participate actively, although they are not subject to examination pressure.

Conclusion

The impact of the pandemic on senior enrollment in higher education has been mixed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. While some universities have experienced a modest decline, others have seen a growth in demand for alternative educational offerings. The state’s higher education institutions remain committed to providing accessible and engaging learning opportunities for seniors, recognizing their valuable contributions to the academic environment.
