French Alps Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee Officially Established

Lyon, France – After a period of anticipation, the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (Cojop) of the French Alps 2030 was officially inaugurated at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, in close proximity to its future headquarters.

"Finally!" exclaimed some observers, justifiably so given the protracted process since the French bid was awarded the 2030 Winter Games, just before the start of the 2024 Paris Games. This contrasted with the rapid pace at which the bid had initially progressed.

It is important to note that the project to host the 2030 Winter Games was officially launched in January 2022 under the leadership of Renaud Muselier, the President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. As an outsider, the French bid faced competition from candidacies from Switzerland and Sweden.

However, the French Alps quickly proved their worth, rising above their rivals to emerge as the frontrunner in November 2023. The bid’s success was attributed to a number of factors:

  • Strong local support: The bid enjoyed overwhelming support from the local population, who saw the Games as an opportunity to showcase their region and boost its economy.
  • Government backing: The French government fully supported the bid and provided significant financial and logistical resources.
  • Experienced leadership: The bid was led by a team of experienced professionals with a proven track record in organizing major sporting events.
  • Comprehensive bid plan: The bid plan presented a detailed and well-thought-out vision for the Games, including infrastructure development, sustainability measures, and athlete welfare.

Challenges Ahead

While the official establishment of Cojop is a significant milestone, the Organizing Committee still faces a number of challenges as it prepares for the 2030 Games:

  • Infrastructure development: The bid promised to deliver a sustainable and environmentally friendly Games, which will require significant investment in infrastructure, including transportation, accommodation, and sports facilities.
  • Funding: The Organizing Committee will need to secure significant funding from a variety of sources, including government grants, corporate sponsorships, and ticket sales.
  • Sustainability: The Games must be organized in a way that minimizes their environmental impact and leaves a positive legacy for the region.
  • Security: The Games will be a major international event, requiring a high level of security to protect athletes, spectators, and officials.

Cojop’s Mission

Despite these challenges, Cojop is confident in its ability to deliver a successful and memorable Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Committee’s mission is to:

  • Host a world-class sporting event that showcases the best of the Olympic and Paralympic spirit.
  • Create a positive and lasting legacy for the French Alps region and its communities.
  • Promote sustainable practices and environmental stewardship throughout the Games and beyond.

Next Steps

Cojop will now begin the process of finalizing plans for the Games, including the construction of venues, the recruitment of volunteers, and the development of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy. The Committee will also work closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to ensure that the Games meet the highest international standards.

The 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are expected to attract millions of spectators and generate billions of euros in economic activity for the French Alps region. Cojop is determined to deliver an event that will be remembered for its sporting excellence, sustainability, and enduring legacy.
