Notable Events

  • 2024: The European Union (EU) launches a military operation to secure merchant shipping in the Red Sea and adjacent waters leading to the Suez Canal. The German frigate "Hessen" was already en route to the area before the ministerial decision.

  • 2020: In Hanau, Hesse, Germany, a 43-year-old German man shoots nine people with foreign roots in shisha bars and a kiosk. He then kills his mother and himself. The trained banker legally possessed weapons as a sports shooter. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office classifies the act as racist.

  • 2000: In Vienna, Austria, well over 100,000 people demonstrate against the new right-wing conservative government of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ).

  • 1985: Shortly before landing in Bilbao, Spain, a Boeing 727 of the Spanish airline "Iberia" strikes a television transmission tower and crashes into Mount Oiz. All 148 passengers and crew are killed.

  • 1945: With the landing of US troops on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific during World War II begins.
