Bayern Munich Balances Contract Renewals with Salary Management
Despite recent lucrative contract extensions for key players at FC Bayern, sporting director Max Eberl emphasizes the importance of maintaining salary structure within the club.
"In the long run, we aim to maintain a balanced salary structure. Over the next few months and years, we are also striving to achieve a gradual reduction," Eberl stated in an interview with Prime Video. "This is a goal that we have discussed with both the executive board and the supervisory board."
However, Eberl acknowledges the necessity of investing in top players who significantly contribute to the team’s success and title aspirations. "For players who make a difference and who we hope will bring us trophies, we are willing to spend money. And Joshua Kimmich is a leader, destined to become captain of FC Bayern in the future when Manuel Neuer eventually retires," Eberl added.
Kimmich’s current contract expires at the end of the season. Bayern Munich has recently secured new deals with highly coveted young stars Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies. Former Germany goalkeeper Neuer has also extended his stay for another year.
Striking a Balance
Balancing the desire to retain top talent with responsible salary management is a delicate task that Bayern Munich is navigating. Eberl emphasizes the need for a long-term perspective in this regard.
"There are certain economic realities that we must consider. We cannot simply exceed our means," Eberl explained. "We need to ensure that the club remains financially healthy and sustainable for the future."
Prioritizing Key Players
While acknowledging the importance of financial prudence, Eberl stresses that the club will not hesitate to invest in players who are essential to their on-field success. Kimmich, in particular, is viewed as a cornerstone of the team and a future captain.
"Kimmich is an exceptional player with immense leadership qualities. He embodies the values and aspirations of FC Bayern," Eberl said. "Securing his long-term future with the club was a top priority for us."
Balancing Act
The challenge for Bayern Munich lies in finding the optimal balance between these competing considerations. The club must maintain a competitive squad capable of challenging for major trophies while adhering to a sustainable financial model.
By carefully managing their salary structure and strategically investing in key players, Bayern Munich aims to continue their dominance in German and European football while also ensuring the club’s long-term health and prosperity.
