Securam EOS Smart Lock: Improved, but Connectivity Woes Persist

Introduction
In 2020, Securam introduced the Touch smart lock, a promising first attempt from a company known for its expertise in safes. While capable, it exhibited some drawbacks, namely an unrefined app and the lack of Wi-Fi support. The Securam EOS aims to address these issues, offering an enhanced experience for a more affordable price.

Hardware Overview
The EOS boasts a fresh rectangular design, departing from the hockey puck shape of its predecessor. Its industrial aesthetics may not align with classic home décor, but its functional layout prevails. The exterior escutcheon features a prominent fingerprint reader and a smaller numeric keypad. Notably, the door sensor feature integrates seamlessly into the interior escutcheon, extending arms to align with the door’s edge, eliminating the need for separate dangling sensors.

Installation and Setup
The SecuramGuard app guides users through the installation process, utilizing helpful video clips. However, a minor issue with the deadbolt mechanism may require assistance from tech support. The app replaces the previous Securam APAC, offering a more basic and utilitarian interface.

Wi-Fi Connectivity
The EOS incorporates built-in Wi-Fi, unlike its predecessor, which required a separate bridge. While this enhancement improves convenience, it potentially reduces battery life, with four AAs powering the lock for an estimated 6 to 8 months. During testing, the Wi-Fi experience encountered some initial hiccups, requiring multiple attempts to register the lock with the app.

App Features
The SecuramGuard app has seen improvements over its predecessor, but it still has room for refinement. The excessive sign-in requirement upon app launch remains a persistent inconvenience. Key features include:

  • Access to lock/unlock functions
  • Activity log
  • Auto-lock options
  • Door sensor activation/deactivation
  • Speaker volume adjustment (though the volume could be improved)

Alexa and Google Assistant Integration
Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility allows for hands-free commands to lock or unlock the door. However, the app allows users to disable voice commands for security concerns.

User Management and Connectivity Issues
The EOS supports only nine users, including administrators, residents, and visitors. While visitor access is possible in theory, testing revealed an ongoing "communication error" that prevented successful configuration. Connectivity issues were a significant concern during testing, resulting in intermittent app control disruptions. These problems pose a major inconvenience for smart lock users, as they may face unexpected lockouts due to app connectivity failures.

Conclusion
The Securam EOS smart lock offers some improvements over its predecessor but falls short in terms of connectivity reliability. While its fingerprint and touchscreen access functions work effectively, the persistent app connectivity issues can be a serious hindrance. At $169, it presents a more affordable option than its predecessors, but Securam must prioritize resolving the connectivity problems to compete with the leading smart locks on the market.
