UK Ready to Deploy Troops for Ukrainian Peacekeeping Force, Starmer Says
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom is prepared to send soldiers to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force. In a guest article for the British Telegraph, Starmer expressed his country’s willingness to lead efforts in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
Troop Deployment to Ensure a Lasting Peace
Starmer emphasized that any peacekeeping deployment would be contingent upon the end of the war. The goal, he said, is to prevent a mere pause in hostilities that could lead to renewed Russian aggression.
"I do not say this lightly," Starmer wrote. "I understand the gravity of asking British men and women to put themselves in harm’s way."
However, he argued, supporting Ukraine’s security is crucial for the safety of Europe and the UK itself.
US Calls on Europe for Security Guarantees
The US government has urged Germany and other EU member states to establish their commitments to providing security guarantees for Ukraine. President Donald Trump and senior US officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, have made it clear that they expect European countries to take the lead in this regard.
However, it remains doubtful whether European nations will be able to assemble a sufficiently equipped force to guarantee peace in Ukraine.
European Summit in Paris
A European summit on the Ukraine war will convene in Paris on Monday. Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the leaders of Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark are expected to attend. The meeting aims to coordinate a common European position and secure a place at any potential peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.
Concerns over US-Russia Negotiations
Recently, fears have grown that the US may negotiate a peace settlement with Russia without involving Ukraine or Europe. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia on Monday. Rubio stated on Sunday that Ukraine and Europe would be included in substantive negotiations.
