German State’s Left-Wing Party Advocates for Extended Repair Bonus
Erfurt, Germany, January 26, 2023 – The Left-Wing faction in the Thuringian state parliament resolves to push for additional funding for the Repair Bonus program.
Repair Bonus: A Success Story in Resource Conservation
"The Repair Bonus is a successful model that contributes significantly to conserving resources," said Jens Thomas, environmental policy spokesperson for the Left-Wing faction. He highlights the high demand for the program, evidenced by the rapid depletion of funds in previous years. "The state government itself has acknowledged the need for additional funding to ensure a continuous funding stream in 2025."
Criticism of Vague Intentions from the Ruling Coalition
Thomas criticizes the ruling Brombeer coalition, consisting of the CDU, BSW, and SPD, for their "vague intentions" regarding the future of the Repair Bonus. "Citizens who take sustainable action seriously cannot be hindered by politics," he emphasizes.
Program’s History and Impact
Established in 2021 by then Green Party Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund, the Thuringian Repair Bonus has facilitated thousands of repair requests. The program reimburses up to 50% of repair costs, capped at €100 per person per year. Commonly repaired items include mobile phones, washing machines, coffee makers, dishwashers, and ovens.
Long-Term Security for Sustainability
Thomas demands long-term security for the program. "We cannot allow politics to slow down citizens who care about sustainable behavior." The Ministry of the Environment, now headed by Tilo Kummer of the BSW, has expressed interest in continuing the program under the new state government. However, the final decision will depend on the outcome of budget negotiations.
Global Context of Repair and Resource Conservation
The Repair Bonus program aligns with the growing global recognition of the importance of repair and resource conservation. Environmental organizations, such as Greenpeace and the Right to Repair movement, advocate for policies that promote repair over disposal and reduce unnecessary waste.
Economic and Environmental Benefits of Repair
Repairing rather than replacing not only extends the lifespan of products but also reduces the demand for raw materials and manufacturing, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports local businesses and repair shops, contributing to the circular economy.
Call for Action
The Left-Wing faction urges the Thuringian state government to prioritize the Repair Bonus program in upcoming budget negotiations. "We call on all political parties to support this program and make Thuringia a role model for sustainable policies," concluded Thomas.
