Munich Security Conference: Europe Faces Challenges Amid Trump’s Return

Munich Security Conference: A Watershed Moment for Global Security

The 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC) concluded as one of the most significant gatherings in the event’s history, according to departing Chairman Christoph Heusgen. Reflecting on the address by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Heusgen expressed concerns about the erosion of shared values.

Europe at a Crossroads: A European Nightmare and a Moment of Clarity

Heusgen described the conference as "a European nightmare" but also a clarifying moment. It highlighted the divergence between the United States under President Trump and Europe. "We’ve also noticed that even Republican senators are very careful to make public statements because they fear their president," Heusgen said.

He emphasized the need for Europe to stand united in potential peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. "We must show much more strength," he urged, calling for the development of a European security plan for Ukraine.

The Threat of Autocracy: An Axis of Autocrats

Heusgen warned of the growing danger posed by a potential axis of autocrats comprising the United States, China, and Russia. Regarding Germany and Europe, he asserted, "Democrats must stick together and not get bogged down in lengthy coalition negotiations. We need to find a quick response to the challenges we face."

Wolfgang Ischinger, longtime MSC Chairman, thanked Heusgen for his contributions. His successor, former NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, praised Heusgen for strengthening, broadening, and enhancing "the world’s most important expert gathering on security policy."

France Calls for European Security Meeting

In the aftermath of the MSC, the French government announced plans for a meeting focused on European security. French President Emmanuel Macron will convene key European leaders for discussions, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

CDU Leader: Europe Must Prepare for the Worst

CDU leader Friedrich Merz expressed concerns about the implications of Trump’s return to the White House. "The political order of the European continent is under threat," he wrote in a circular email. He emphasized the need for Europe to "stand on its own two feet" and defend its values.

EU Urges Increased Pressure on Putin

EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for Europe to work together to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Europe has untapped possibilities to increase the pressure on Putin," she stated. "We must not fall into Putin’s trap of dividing Europe."

Kallas stressed the importance of credible security guarantees backed by substantial military support from both Europe and the United States. "Let’s focus now on what Europeans can do," she said.
