Migration and Ukraine: Gysi, Wagenknecht, Lindner on Border Controls, Refugees, and Diplomacy

Migration, Ukraine, and the Bundestag Election: Perspectives from Gysi, Wagenknecht, and Lindner

Gregor Gysi: Humanitarian Border Policy and Skilled Immigration

Linken politician Gregor Gysi has firmly rejected migrant pushbacks at borders. "They achieve nothing," he stated during RTL’s "Kreuzverhör" program. "Migrants simply cross the border a few kilometers further, possibly resorting to undeclared work, which depresses wages."

Gysi emphasized the principle of asylum: "Those genuinely persecuted politically must have the right to asylum." Germany, he believes, requires a comprehensive migration policy overhaul. "It starts with the skilled workers we urgently need," he said. However, he criticized excessive bureaucratic hurdles in professional recognition.

Sahra Wagenknecht: Peacemaking and European Autonomy

Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of BSW, called for the United States to contribute to the financial costs of a Ukrainian peace settlement. "We should resist being paymasters but bystanders," she stated. Wagenknecht argued that European policy in recent years has been unwise and inapt, leading to the current predicament.

She advocates for a more assertive European and German foreign policy. "We mustn’t rubber-stamp everything Washington presents us," she emphasized.

Christian Lindner: FDP’s Election Push

FDP leader Christian Lindner urged his party to intensify its campaign efforts ahead of the upcoming German Bundestag election. Citing recent polls indicating 5% support for the FDP, he declared: "An FDP presence in the German Bundestag automatically rules out a majority for a Black-Green coalition. For some, this alone is reason enough to vote FDP."

Key Points

  • Gysi opposes migrant pushbacks and advocates for a more humane border policy.
  • He calls for an improved migration policy that prioritizes economic needs.
  • Wagenknecht criticizes European foreign policy in Ukraine and demands US financial responsibility in a peace settlement.
  • She urges Germany and Europe to adopt a more independent stance.
  • Lindner emphasizes the importance of the FDP as a potential kingmaker in the Bundestag.
