Eintracht Frankfurt Faces Skhiri Injury Scare Ahead of Holstein Kiel Clash
Eintracht Frankfurt’s hopes of continuing their unbeaten start to 2023 may be hampered by an injury concern surrounding defensive stalwart Ellyes Skhiri.
The Tunisian midfielder suffered a blow to the ribs during Frankfurt’s recent draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, leaving his availability for Sunday’s Bundesliga home game against Holstein Kiel in doubt.
"He took a knock to the ribs in Mönchengladbach. It could be close," said Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller.
Should Skhiri be ruled out, the 44-year-old coach insists he has ample cover within his squad.
"He’s a very important player for us, but we should be able to compensate for any absence without any major problems," Toppmöller stated.
However, Frankfurt will definitely be without defensive anchor Robin Koch, as well as Junior Dina Ebimbe, Krisztian Lisztes, and Igor Matanovic.
After three consecutive draws, third-placed Frankfurt, who remain undefeated in all competitions this year, are eager to secure a victory before their upcoming fixtures against league leaders Bayern Munich and reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.
"Enough with the draws, we want to finally win again," Toppmöller declared. "We’re burning to take three points. We’ve missed that recently."
Skhiri’s Importance to Frankfurt
Skhiri has been a mainstay in Frankfurt’s midfield since joining the club from Montpellier in 2019. His versatility, physical presence, and defensive acumen have made him a key cog in Toppmöller’s system.
Skhiri’s ability to break up opposition attacks, win possession, and distribute the ball effectively has been crucial to Frankfurt’s success in recent years. He has also contributed with goals and assists, showcasing his attacking prowess.
Potential Replacements for Skhiri
Despite Toppmöller’s confidence in his squad’s depth, losing Skhiri would be a significant blow to Frankfurt’s defensive solidity.
One possible replacement could be Makoto Hasebe. The experienced Japanese midfielder is known for his tactical intelligence, positional awareness, and ability to read the game well. However, at 38 years of age, Hasebe may not be able to match Skhiri’s physicality and dynamism.
Another option is Aurelio Buta. The Angolan defender has played primarily as a right-back for Frankfurt but has also featured in central midfield. Buta is a strong tackler, good in the air, and possesses a decent passing range. However, his lack of experience in the holding midfield role could be a concern.
Frankfurt’s Quest for Victory
Regardless of who replaces Skhiri, Frankfurt will be determined to end their recent run of draws and secure a vital victory.
With trips to Munich and Leverkusen on the horizon, a win against Holstein Kiel would provide a much-needed confidence boost and strengthen their position in the Bundesliga standings.
Toppmöller and his players will be eager to showcase their attacking prowess against a Kiel side that has been inconsistent this season. Frankfurt have scored in every game they have played in 2023, and they will be looking to continue that trend.
The match against Holstein Kiel promises to be an intriguing encounter, with both teams seeking different outcomes. Frankfurt will aim to consolidate their position in the top three, while Kiel will be desperate to climb away from the relegation zone.
