50 Years of SNL: From Interns to Icons, Plaza Returns After Husband’s Death

Saturday Night Live Celebrates 50 Years with Star-Studded Reunion

In a grand commemoration of its half-century milestone, Saturday Night Live (SNL) welcomed back a galaxy of its most celebrated alumni to the legendary Studio 8H. The star-studded roster spanned generations of comedy royalty, from relative newcomers like Kate McKinnon and John Mulaney to seasoned veterans like Adam Sandler and Tina Fey.

One poignant presence among the returning icons was Aubrey Plaza, whose journey at SNL began as an intern and NBC page. This marked her first public appearance since the untimely passing of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, earlier this year.

Plaza, clad in a psychedelic tie-dyed shirt and sleek black blazer, took to the stage to introduce a powerhouse musical performance by Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard, who rendered a stirring rendition of Sinéad O’Connor’s "Nothing Compares 2 U." The night was punctuated by a series of such star-studded tributes.

Joining the musical extravaganza were legendary figures such as Paul McCartney and Sabrina Carpenter, who shared the stage with rising cast member Marcello Hernández in a side-splitting comedy sketch. The special broadcast culminated a weekend-long celebration that included a grand concert on Friday graced by the likes of Cher, Lady Gaga, and Ms. Lauryn Hill.

Baena, a talented filmmaker and director, exchanged vows with Plaza in 2021. His tragic suicide on January 4 at the age of 47 left an unfathomable void. "This is an unimaginable tragedy," a statement issued on behalf of Plaza and the Baena family to USA TODAY proclaimed. "We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time."

Originally scheduled to present at the Golden Globes the next day, Plaza withdrew from the event. Sunday’s SNL broadcast marked her first televised appearance since the heartbreaking loss. She refrained from gracing the pre-broadcast red carpet.
