350 Years of Garden History: Hannover’s Großer Garten Unveils Its Past

The Grand Garden of Hannover Celebrates 350 Years of Horticultural Excellence

A Heritage of Baroque Beauty

Nestled within the heart of Hannover, the Grand Garden stands as a testament to 350 years of horticultural artistry. This year, the garden embarks on a year-long celebration of its rich history, showcasing the grandeur of its Baroque origins and the unwavering passion for plant life that has sustained it through the centuries.

Unveiling the Art of Garden Craft

Kicking off the festivities, the exhibition "Garden Art from Masterful Hands" delves into the garden’s captivating past. At its core lies the resurgence of the Orangery, once again fulfilling its original purpose as a winter sanctuary for precious plants. Visitors are invited to witness the meticulous care that went into safeguarding the vibrant flora that adorned the royal tables.

In the 18th century, an army of 80 laborers diligently moved the plants four times annually, marking the transition from their winter haven to the balmy outdoors and back again. To combat the harsh Hanoverian winters, a pioneering warm water heating system was ingeniously devised.

A Legacy Enduring Through Time

The genesis of the Grand Garden can be traced back to 1675, making it one of the few surviving Baroque gardens to retain its original layout. Initially conceived as a secluded sanctuary for the summer retreat of Hanover’s rulers, it gracefully opened its gates to the public in 1763. As the oldest of the four Herrenhausen Gardens, it shares the botanical legacy with the Berggarten, Georgengarten, and Welfengarten.

Highlights of the Anniversary Celebrations

The year-long commemoration offers a myriad of events. On March 15th and 16th, the Citrus Festival beckons enthusiasts to delve into the secrets of cultivating these vibrant plants. Guided by experts, visitors will delve into the intricacies of proper care and revel in interactive workshops.

Music lovers will be captivated by classical concerts set against the backdrop of the garden’s serene beauty. The melodies will soar through the air on February 25th and March 28th, evoking the spirit of bygone eras.

The grand finale of the anniversary year, a spectacular summer festival, is scheduled for August 23rd. This vibrant celebration promises to immerse visitors in a kaleidoscope of colors, captivating performances, and a resounding tribute to the enduring legacy of the Grand Garden.

The Significance of the Grand Garden

As the celebratory events unfold, Hannovers Oberbürgermeister Belit Onay (Grüne) reflects on the significance of the Grand Garden, emphasizing its role as more than a historical landmark. It serves as a living testament to the transformative power of nature, a place where the beauty of plants has been lovingly preserved and shared for generations.

The spirit of the Grand Garden continues to blossom, inspiring present and future generations to appreciate the invaluable connection between humanity and the natural world.
