Tragic Homicide: Off-Campus Student Murder Investigation Underway
Newhall, California – Authorities have launched an extensive homicide investigation following the discovery of a 23-year-old California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) student dead in her off-campus apartment. The victim, Menghan Zhuang, also known as Emily King, succumbed to multiple upper body injuries, authorities confirmed.
The Incident and Investigation
On February 4, Zhuang’s roommate discovered her lifeless body inside their Newhall apartment. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene. The investigation, led by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has since determined that the act was not random.
Male Companion and Surveillance Footage
According to Lieutenant Michael Modica, Zhuang arrived home with a male companion on the evening prior to her tragic demise. Surveillance footage captured the same individual climbing out of Zhuang’s second-story window the following afternoon.
Modica revealed that Zhuang was acquainted with the unidentified male, evidenced by his presence inside her apartment. The individual, who authorities believe is in his 20s and of Asian descent, is currently the focus of the investigation.
Affiliation and Suspect Description
While Modica declined to confirm the suspect’s affiliation with CalArts, authorities described him as wearing a long sleeve shirt and black pants at the time of the incident.
CalArts Involvement
CalArts has been instrumental in facilitating communication between law enforcement and Zhuang’s family, who reside in China. The school praised Zhuang as an art major in her senior undergraduate year and expressed its commitment to processing this devastating loss.

Authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to CalArts students. They urged the community to come forward with any information that could help identify the suspect responsible for Zhuang’s murder. A $20,000 reward is being offered for tips leading to an arrest.
