Hilton’s Lavish Spa Closed by Turkish Authorities to Preserve Ancient Cistern
Istanbul, Turkey – A luxurious spa operated by the Hilton hotel chain, nestled beneath the vaulted ceilings of a 1,500-year-old Istanbul cistern, has been shut down by local authorities in a bid to safeguard the historic site.
The spa, situated in the heart of the Sultanahmet tourist district and connected to the Hilton’s Hagia Sofia Mansions hotel, has come under scrutiny for alleged unauthorized practices. In 2023, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism filed a complaint, prompting the Fatih municipality to conduct inspections.
"The spa, located near the Hagia Sophia Mosque, has been sealed by the Fatih Municipality’s building control department," a spokesperson for the district municipality stated.
The ministry emphasized the importance of protecting the cistern as a cultural asset, highlighting its significance as an ancient water reservoir constructed by Emperor Justinian.
The spa’s website showcased stunning photographs of a sprawling tiled pool, illuminated by soft lighting beneath the rosy brick vaults, adorned with fountains, jets, and a ramp for descending into the water.
"An experience like no other, set amidst a historical setting," the spa, owned by Turkish company Dorak and operated under the Curio by Hilton brand, promised on its promotional materials.
When contacted by AFP, a spokesperson for the Dorak group declined to comment, acknowledging only that a "legal procedure" was underway. An employee of the spa also refrained from speaking to the press.
The Sultanahmet district, located on the European side of Istanbul, is a historic treasure trove, housing iconic landmarks such as the Grand Bazaar, the Hagia Sophia Mosque, and the Basilica Cistern. The latter, a testament to Istanbul’s architectural heritage, is one of the city’s most captivating attractions.
The closure of the spa has sparked concern among local historians and preservationists, who argue that any unauthorized alterations or commercial exploitation of the cistern could irreversibly damage its historical integrity.
Experts emphasize the need for stringent regulations and enforcement measures to protect Istanbul’s rich cultural heritage from inappropriate development or insensitive use. The Basilica Cistern, a UNESCO World Heritage site, deserves particular care and protection, they maintain.
As authorities continue their investigation, the future of the Hilton spa remains uncertain. The closure serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing tourism with the preservation of historical sites, ensuring that the cultural legacy of Istanbul is safeguarded for generations to come.
